Overview
Die Hard is a 1988 action thriller film directed by John McTiernan, based on the 1979 novel Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorp. The film stars Bruce Willis as John McClane, a New York City police detective who is visiting his estranged wife, Holly (Bonnie Bedelia), at her company's Christmas party in Los Angeles. The party is taken over by a group of terrorists led by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), a sophisticated, ruthless criminal. McClane is the only one who can stop them. The film is set almost entirely in the Nakatomi Plaza, a 40-story skyscraper. McClane uses his wits, his courage, and his knowledge of the building to fight the terrorists. The film is a classic action movie, with iconic lines ("Yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker"), memorable villains, and incredible stunts. Die Hard was a massive critical and commercial success, earning over $140 million worldwide. It is widely considered one of the greatest action films of all time and is often cited as the best Christmas movie ever made.
