Overview
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 continues the story of the Second Age of Middle-earth, one of the most dramatic and consequential periods in J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium. The third season will likely cover the downfall of Númenor and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, two of the most epic storylines in the entire Tolkien mythos. After the events of Season 2, where Sauron (Charlie Vickers) forged the One Ring in secret and revealed himself to the Elves, the Dark Lord is now openly at war with the Free Peoples of Middle-earth. The Elves, led by Gil-galad and Elrond, have realized that the Rings they forged are compromised — they are tied to the One Ring, and if Sauron controls the One, he can control the wearers of the other Rings. The Dwarves, having discovered that their Rings have awakened a terrible evil in the depths of Khazad-dûm (what will become the Balrog), must decide whether to seal their mines forever. The Men of Númenor, having been corrupted by Sauron when he was brought to their island as a prisoner, are divided. The King's Men, who worship Sauron and fear death above all, want to sail to Valinor and seize immortality from the Valar. The Faithful, who remain loyal to the Elves and the Valar, want to oppose Sauron and save what remains of their honor. The season will depict the Downfall of Númenor, where King Ar-Pharazôn builds a massive fleet and sails to Valinor, only to have the island sunk by the Valar and the world changed from flat to round. The survivors, led by Elendil and his sons Isildur and Anárion, flee to Middle-earth and found the kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor. The season then leads to the War of the Last Alliance, where Elves and Men join forces to besiege Barad-dûr, Sauron's fortress. The battle is one of the most epic in Tolkien's writing, culminating in the duel between Elendil, Gil-galad, and Sauron, where both Elendil and Gil-galad are killed, but Isildur cuts the One Ring from Sauron's hand. The third season is in production and is expected to be released in 2026. The show is a must-see for fans of Tolkien and for anyone who loves epic fantasy on the grandest scale.
