Overview
Secret Invasion Season 2 expands the scope and consequences of the Skrull infiltration storyline, which the first season revealed was only the beginning of a far more complex and troubling situation for humanity, the Skrulls, and the relationship between Earth's superhero community and the alien refugees Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) has been trying to help resettle for decades. Fury, whose moral authority was severely compromised by the revelations of Season 1 — including the fact that his own wife was a Skrull — must rebuild his credibility and his network simultaneously while the faction of radicalized Skrulls under Gravik's successor pursues an agenda that is simultaneously more understandable and more dangerous. The question of identity — who is human, who is Skrull, who can be trusted, who has already been replaced — runs through every scene like a current of paranoia that the show uses to examine contemporary anxieties about authenticity, loyalty, and the institutions we trust with our safety. G'iah (Emilia Clarke), the most powerful Skrull in history following the events of Season 1 (where she gained the powers of multiple Avengers), becomes the season's most compelling figure as she navigates the space between two peoples, belonging fully to neither. The British setting expands into continental Europe as the conspiracy reveals its full dimensions, with Skrull cells operating in Paris, Berlin, and Rome, each with its own agenda and its own relationship to the radical cause. New human allies are introduced, including a British MI6 officer who has been tracking Skrull activity for years, and a journalist who is investigating the conspiracy and may expose it to the world — with consequences that no one can predict. The season also features flashbacks to Fury's younger years, showing how he first encountered the Skrulls and made the promises that he has been trying to keep for decades.
