The Lion King
Overview
The Lion King is a 2019 musical drama film directed and produced by Jon Favreau, a photorealistic computer-animated remake of Disney's 1994 animated classic of the same name. The film uses cutting-edge virtual production techniques to create animals and environments that look indistinguishable from live-action nature documentaries. The story follows the same beloved narrative as the original: Simba, a young lion prince, is born to King Mufasa (voiced by James Earl Jones, reprising his role) and Queen Sarabi (Alfre Woodard) in the Pride Lands of Africa. Mufasa is a wise and beloved king who teaches Simba about the "Circle of Life" — the balance between all living things. However, Mufasa's younger brother Scar (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is jealous and bitter, believing he should be king. Scar conspires with the hyenas (voiced by Florence Kasumba, Eric André, and Keegan-Michael Key) to kill Mufasa and Simba. Scar lures Simba into a gorge, then triggers a wildebeest stampede. Mufasa saves Simba but is thrown to his death by Scar, who then convinces Simba that he is responsible for his father's death. Simba flees the Pride Lands in guilt and shame. He is found by Timon the meerkat (Billy Eichner) and Pumbaa the warthog (Seth Rogen), who teach him their philosophy: "Hakuna Matata" — no worries. Simba grows into an adult (voiced by Donald Glover) living a carefree life, eating grubs, and forgetting his past. But when his childhood friend Nala (Beyoncé-Knowles Carter) finds him and tells him that Scar has ruined the Pride Lands, Simba must confront his past, accept his responsibility, and reclaim his throne. The film faithfully recreates the iconic songs from the original, including "Circle of Life," "I Just Can't Wait to Be King," "Be Prepared," "Hakuna Matata," and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight." The voice cast is exceptional, with Glover bringing warmth and vulnerability to Simba, and Beyoncé bringing strength and power to Nala. Ejiofor makes Scar more tragic and less campy than the original. The film's visuals are stunning, though some critics argued that the photorealistic style made the animals less expressive and emotional than the hand-drawn original. The Lion King was a massive box office success, earning over $1.6 billion worldwide, making it the seventh highest-grossing film of all time. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. The film is a technological marvel and a nostalgic trip for fans of the original, even if it does not surpass the 1994 classic.
