Succession Season 1
Overview
Succession Season 1 is the first season of HBO's satirical black comedy drama, following the Roy family, the dysfunctional owners of a global media and entertainment conglomerate called Waystar Royco. The series begins with Logan Roy (Brian Cox), the powerful, ruthless, and aging founder of Waystar, suffering a health crisis that leaves him incapacitated. His four children — Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Connor (Alan Ruck) — all believe they should succeed him. The first season follows their desperate, backstabbing attempts to win their father's approval and control of the company. Kendall, the eldest son and heir apparent, is a desperate, insecure, and drug-addicted man who attempts a coup against his father but fails spectacularly. Shiv, the only daughter, is a political consultant who thinks she is smarter than everyone else, and she tries to position herself as the successor while also planning her wedding to Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen). Roman, the youngest son, is a crude, immature manchild who uses sarcasm and perverse humor to hide his insecurities, and he is dismissed by everyone as unserious. Connor, the oldest son, is a buffoon who is not taken seriously by anyone, and he runs for president as a vanity project. The first season ends with Kendall being forced to take the fall for a company scandal and betraying his father again, publicly at a press conference. The first season was a critical success, winning numerous awards including the Golden Globe for Best Television Series Drama. The series is famous for its dialogue, which is full of vicious insults, corporate jargon, and hilarious profanity.
