Overview

The Godfather Part II is a 1974 epic crime film directed by Francis Ford Coppola, serving as both a sequel and a prequel to the 1972 film The Godfather. The film is based on the 1969 novel by Mario Puzo. The film is structured as two parallel narratives. The first narrative follows Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) in the late 1950s, as he tries to expand his crime family's business into Las Vegas and Cuba. He is opposed by a rival gangster, Hyman Roth (Lee Strasberg), and he is betrayed by his brother, Fredo (John Cazale). Michael orders Fredo to be killed, and he becomes a cold, ruthless, and isolated man. The second narrative follows Vito Corleone (Robert De Niro) as a young man in early 20th-century New York City. He immigrates to America from Sicily, he is orphaned, and he rises to power by killing the local Black Hand boss, Don Fanucci (Gastone Moschin). He becomes the Godfather, a man of power and respect. The film is a meditation on power, family, and the corrupting influence of ambition. It is a dark, tragic, and epic film. The Godfather Part II was a critical and commercial success, earning over $93 million on a $13 million budget. It won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor for Robert De Niro, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It is widely considered one of the greatest sequels ever made and one of the greatest films of all time.
