One Life
Overview
One Life is a 2023 biographical drama film directed by James Hawes, based on the true story of Nicholas Winton (Anthony Hopkins), a British stockbroker who rescued 669 Jewish children from Czechoslovakia before the outbreak of World War II. The film follows Winton in two timelines: as a young man in 1938 (played by Johnny Flynn), and as an old man in 1988 (played by Anthony Hopkins). In 1938, Winton organizes the rescue of the children, known as the "Kindertransport." He works tirelessly to find foster families for them in Britain. In 1988, he is haunted by his past, and he is unaware that his story is about to become public. The film culminates in the famous scene from the BBC program That's Life!, where Winton is surprised by a studio audience full of the now-adult children he saved. The film is a powerful, emotional, and inspiring story about one man's courage and compassion. It was praised for Anthony Hopkins's performance.
