Toy Story 4
Overview
Toy Story 4 is a 2019 computer-animated comedy-drama film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and directed by Josh Cooley, serving as the fourth installment in the beloved Toy Story franchise. The film takes place after the events of Toy Story 3, where Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), and the rest of the toys are now living happily with their new owner, Bonnie, a young girl who is about to start kindergarten. Woody has been relegated to the back of Bonnie's closet, rarely played with, while the other toys like Jessie, Rex, Hamm, and Slinky Dog are still part of Bonnie's daily adventures. On Bonnie's first day of school, feeling anxious and lonely, she creates a new toy from a spork, some pipe cleaners, and googly eyes — Forky (Tony Hale). Forky is convinced he is trash, not a toy, and he constantly tries to throw himself away. Woody takes it upon himself to teach Forky what it means to be a toy and to protect him. During a family road trip, Forky jumps out of the RV window, and Woody jumps after him. They find themselves lost in an antique store, where Woody is reunited with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), his long-lost love who was given away years ago. Bo has become a "lost toy," living on the streets and surviving without an owner. She is independent, resourceful, and tough — a very different character from the delicate shepherdess Woody once knew. The film also introduces new characters: Gabby Gabby (Christina Hendricks), a vintage doll with a broken voice box who desperately wants to be loved; her silent ventriloquist dummy henchmen, the Bensons; and Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves), a Canadian stuntman action figure with deep insecurities about his own inadequacy. The film explores profound themes about purpose, letting go, and what it means to be a toy. Woody realizes that Bonnie no longer needs him, and he must choose between returning to a life where he is ignored or becoming a lost toy with Bo, helping other toys find children to love. The ending is emotional and satisfying: Woody says goodbye to Buzz and the rest of the gang, choosing to stay with Bo and live a life of freedom and purpose. Toy Story 4 was a critical and commercial success, earning over $1.07 billion worldwide. It won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The film is a beautiful, bittersweet conclusion to Woody's arc, teaching audiences that sometimes love means letting go and finding a new path.
